After a good hiatus, Square Enix has pulled back the veil again to give us a good look at some Kingdom Hearts magic. Square revealed the trailer during last night’s Kingdom Hearts Orchestra concert in Los Angeles and has since put the trailer up on their Youtube channel (see video above). While the trailer is still pretty similar to the previous few gameplay teasers, we did finally get some teases regarding the story and a solid view of the remodeled Olympus world complete with an epic titan battle.
It seems like the next installment will have Pete, Maleficent, and Hades up to no good again and searching for a mysterious black box. We also see that Ansem and Xemnas are still lurking about and hinting at the potential return of Roxas; which could require Sora to give himself over to the darkness. There still is no release date available for the upcoming game (no surprise there, this is Square Enix we are talking about), but the end of the trailer did announce that more will be unveiled at Disney’s D23 Expo next month. On July 15, Square will revealed a new trailer and new world for fans to gawk over.
It is anyone’s guess at what the new world might be, but given the popularity of Star Wars and Marvel as on late it could easily be a world related to either the new Trilogy or the Avengers films. Regardless, the new Kingdom Hearts looks absolutely gorgeous and it is a blast to see Sora, Donald, and Goofy teaming up again to knock around some Heartless. What is the most exciting thing thus far is seeing how dynamic and out-of-this-world the magic and team-up abilities have gotten since Kingdom Hearts II. Hopefully next month we can get a release date for the game (pretty please Square!!!).
Update: Square Enix released another trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 during Disney’s D23 Expo (see below). The trailer not only revealed the gorgeous Toy Story world, but also announced that the game will be officially released some time in 2018!
Since it is Square we are talking about, we can definitely take that release window with a rather large grain of salt. Only time will tell if they can hold true to it, but for now we did learn a few other neat things about KH3 from director Tetsuya Nomura:
- There will be a second playable character
- Gummi Ships will be returning and will be improved
- The game’s long production cycle is due to Square’s higher management
- There may be a Switch version in the future, but it is a ways off
Expect more world reveals and details in the coming months. All aboard the hype train everyone??
