This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was packed with loads of announcements, trailers, casting reveals, comics, cosplay and much more. We would like to take a moment to highlight some of the biggest reveals of this year’s SDCC:
That Wonder Woman Trailer
Seriously, forget Justice League and Suicide Squad… This was the trailer that we needed to see from Warner Bros and DC. Based on the trailer, it seems the film will strike the right balance of origin, action, and female-badassery that we have been waiting for in a superhero film. This brief trailer has left fans drooling for more since its reveal and it is pretty obvious why. Just see for yourself:
Ghost Rider will blaze his way through Agents of Shield
Marvel confirmed the rumors that Ghost Rider will be making his small screen debut on the next season of Agents of Shield during their Hall H panel. It has yet to be revealed how the agents will come into conflict with Ghost Rider, but it was confirmed that the show will utilize one of the more recent Riders, Robbie Reyes, as opposed to the original Johnny Blaze.
As for why the show is choosing to introduce Ghost Rider, producer Jed Whedon explained that given the upcoming release of Dr. Strange it makes logical sense for the show to explore the more mystical and supernatural elements of the Marvel Universe. Marvel television head, Jeph Loeb, explained that they chose Robbie Reyes’ version of Ghost Rider given Robbie’s familial connection to his brother Gab. One of the show’s main themes has always been the concept of family and teamwork, so it makes sense that the Reyes story line would better align with the dynamic of the show.
Marvel and Netflix continue to impress with Luke Cage trailer
That teaser at the end of Jessica Jones definitely wasn’t enough of a taste of what is to come, so thankfully Marvel treated fans to the first full trailer for the series. And it did not disappoint. The trailer gives us a look at a show that may be in contrast to the dynamic and feel of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Here we see a man who is determined and confident in his ability to bring safety, peace, and justice to his home turf of Harlem. There is no doubt that Luke’s abilities will be tested throughout the season, but as he says at the end of the trailer… He is just getting started.
Also using Wu-Tang in the soundtrack is always a plus, a huge plus. See for yourself:
American Gods looks stunning
The television version of the universal acclaimed novel by Neil Gaiman has been in development at Starz for quite some time, so it was nice to finally see a little bit of what they’ve been working on. And just like Luke Cage, it did not disappoint… not even close. It blew many fans, including us here at Split Screens, right out of the water. Many of the scenes in the trailer look as if they walked right off the pages of the book. It also seems that Starz did an excellent job with their casting as each member seems to be playing their role spot on (you can also never go wrong with Ian McShane). 2017 cannot come soon enough…
FX impresses with first look at Legion
Legion is the first television series to feature an X-Men character and from the trailer it seems the show will be all out insanity. This bodes well given that the story focuses on David Haller, a young mutant dealing with schizophrenia and mania. In the comics, David is the son of Professor X and Gabrielle Haller, a catatonic holocaust survivor that Xavier helped to heal from the disorder and the trauma behind it. In the comics, David’s various physic powers are imbued into and controlled by one of his different personalities. For example, one is pyrokinetic while another is telekinetic and so on. It has yet to be confirmed if the show will have any direct connection to the films, but if the trailer is any indication it will sure be one hell of an interesting ride…
Brie Larson is Captain Marvel
Marvel took the time to announce the casting during their Hall H panel. Larson is no stranger to comic book movies, having already starred as Envy in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and recently won Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her role in Room. It makes sense for Marvel to go with an actress of her caliber that also has experience working with fantastical comic book based story lines. While this casting is definitely reassuring and exciting news, we will still have to wait a while for a glimpse at Carol Danvers in all her glory. The film won’t be seeing release until at least 2018, so here is to hoping next Comic-Con can give us an idea of what is to come.
And these highlights are only the tip of the iceberg for what was revealed at this year’s SDCC. There was of course the Justice League and Suicide Squad trailers, an exciting new look at season 3 of Flash, and other major Marvel casting reveals!
